How Much Does a New AC Cost in North County San Diego? (2026 Pricing Guide)
Most HVAC company websites refuse to publish prices. We don't play that game. Here's what new AC and HVAC systems actually cost in North County San Diego in 2026, and what factors push the number up or down.
The honest range
For a typical 1,800–2,400 square foot single-family home in North County, here's what you can budget:
- Central AC replacement (existing ductwork in good shape): $5,500–$8,500
- Full system: AC + furnace replacement: $8,000–$12,000
- Heat pump replacement (one unit handles heating + cooling): $10,000–$16,000
- New central AC + new ductwork: $10,000–$15,000
- 3-zone mini-split system (no ducts needed): $9,000–$15,000
- Single-zone mini-split (one room): $5,000–$7,500
These are real, installed prices — not "starting from" or "as low as" gimmicks. Final number depends on the variables below.
What pushes the price up
Tonnage. Bigger home = bigger system = higher cost. A 5-ton system runs significantly more than a 2.5-ton.
Efficiency rating (SEER2). Code minimum is 14.3 SEER2. We usually recommend 16–18 SEER2 for North County — the bill savings pays back the upcharge in 3–5 years.
Brand. We carry Carrier, Trane, Goodman, and Daikin. Premium brands cost more upfront but typically come with longer warranties and better build quality. Mid-tier brands are great value.
Variable-speed vs single-stage. Variable-speed systems are quieter, more efficient, and better at managing humidity — they cost 20–30% more than single-stage equivalents.
Ductwork condition. If your ducts are leaking 25% of the conditioned air into your attic (which is common in homes 15+ years old), you may need duct sealing or replacement to make a new system actually deliver. This adds $1,000–$2,500 for sealing, or $2,500–$5,000 for a full duct replacement.
Electrical upgrades. Older panels sometimes need a breaker upgrade or a new disconnect for a heat pump install.
Permits. Required for any new equipment install in California. Usually a few hundred dollars; we handle filing.
What pushes the price down
Rebates and tax credits. This is where you can save real money. As of 2026:
- Federal heat pump tax credit: up to $2,000
- SDG&E heat pump rebates: vary by program, often $1,000–$3,000+
- Income-qualified rebates can stack up to thousands more
- Mini-split rebates available at high efficiency tiers
We'll quote both the gross price and the net-after-rebates price. We've filed enough rebate paperwork to know exactly what you qualify for.
Right-sizing. A correctly sized system costs less than an oversized one — and works better. We do Manual J load calculations on every replacement.
Timing. Spring (April–May) and fall (October–November) are the slowest seasons. If you can plan ahead, you'll often get better availability and sometimes lower prices.
What you should NOT base your price decision on
The cheapest quote. Lowball quotes almost always come with shortcuts: undersized equipment, no Manual J calculation, no permit, missing components like a new pad or disconnect, or installer subcontracting that creates warranty headaches later.
The most expensive quote. Premium pricing isn't always premium service. Get three quotes, compare apples to apples, and look for the company that explains *why* their price is what it is.
A "free" thermostat or SEER bump. These are almost always built into the price. Free isn't free.
Why we publish prices
Most HVAC companies treat price as a negotiation tactic — quote high to those who don't push back, drop low when pressured. We think that's nonsense. Our prices are our prices, and we'd rather lose a customer to honesty than win one through games.
If a competitor quotes you significantly less than us, ask them: same brand? Same SEER2 rating? New refrigerant lines? Permit included? Manual J? Removal and disposal? Warranty? Most of the time, the gap is explained by what's missing from the cheap quote.
What's next
If you're ready for an actual quote on your home — measured, sized, and itemized — we do free in-home consultations across San Marcos, Escondido, Carlsbad, Vista, Oceanside, Poway, and surrounding North County cities.
We'll walk through your house, measure your existing system, talk through what's realistic, and give you a written quote you can compare against anyone else's. No pressure, no high-pressure sales scripts.
